Master the subtle art of separating survivors from Visitors with physical tells, dialogue cues, and a full database of guaranteed and randomised characters.
Spoiler & Strategy Warning
This guide discloses visitor identities, quest prerequisites, and scripted appearances up to Night 14. Use it if you are prioritising survival, achievements, or speed-running.
Physical Warning Signs
Perfectly White Teeth
HighTeeth that seem to glow or reflect light unnaturally. Visitors struggle to mimic natural colour variation.
Extreme Nail Condition
MediumEither immaculate, glossy fingernails or filthy, soil-packed nails. Many guaranteed humans show false positives here.
Bloodshot or Glowing Eyes
MediumRed veins, glassy shine, or chronic dryness. Trauma, smoke exposure, and grief can mimic the symptom.
Blurred or Corrupted Photographs
HighVisitor IDs often show digital smear or facial distortion, even when other paperwork looks legitimate.
Low Growling / Inhuman Audio
Very HighGuttural growls or throat clicks almost always indicate a Visitor preparing to strike.
Total Absence of Body Hair
LowHairless armpits or limbs can be grooming choices or radiation side-effects. Treat as supporting evidence only.
Guaranteed Humans
Always safe to admit. Many show false positives, so rely on narrative clues before pulling the trigger.
Name | Clues | Connections | Appearance |
---|---|---|---|
Your Neighbor | Introduces the tutorial and leaves immediately. | No achievements tied; narrative setup only. | Day 1 morning tutorial visit only. |
Neighbor's Daughter | Red, tearful eyes (false symptom) while searching for her father. | Unlocks the "I'm Sorry Little One" achievement if protected. | Returns on Night 4 after the initial plea for shelter. |
Tall Man | Usually the first knock; calm, consistent testimony. | Key ally for passing the Intruder's Night 4 test. | Typically appears on Night 1. |
Burned Firefighter | Severe burns and red eyes (false symptoms) from duty. | Provides the FEMA Notice and unlocks "One Way Ticket". | Guaranteed on Night 7. |
The Widow | Carries her husband's body; crying causes red eyes (false symptom). | None, but denying her can block other human interactions. | Skips appearances if the Shirtless Man is present. |
Cultists (trio) | Uniform robes, cryptic speech; all confirmed human. | Essential for the cult ending—shelter every member. | Arrive together on Night 8. |
Man with Mouth Sewn Shut | Cannot speak; intimidating appearance only. | None, but barring him can impact random visit order. | Refuses entry if the Surgeon is inside. |
Guy in FEMA Coat | Red eyes and fungal armpit (false symptoms) from field work. | None—safe to shelter despite alarming symptoms. | Avoids the house if the Widow or Shirtless Man is staying. |
Guaranteed Visitors
These entities never spawn human. Some are harmless, others lethal, but all can jeopardise endings if mishandled.
Name | Clues | Connections | Appearance |
---|---|---|---|
Intruder / Pale Man | Shirtless, gaunt, hostile; repeats infiltration attempts. | Central to multiple endings and achievements including "Yes, I'm Alone". | Mandatory on Nights 4, 5, 9, and 11. |
Cashier Lady | Confused, gentle demeanour; unaware of Visitor status. | Protecting her is required for "In the Safety of Your Own Home". | Appears on the first night. |
Cat Lady | Carries a cat, unstable behaviour. | Only way to unlock the basement, enabling "Shroom or Doom" and "Embrace The Inevitable". | Guaranteed on Night 4. |
Cold Person | Complains about temperature, reveals a stomach void that kills roommates. | Steps toward the "Event Horizon" achievement. | Random later-night knock without extra conditions. |
Hunched Lady | Admits to being a Visitor after extended conversation. | Required for "In the Safety of Your Own Home" if spared. | Random evening visitor. |
Amogus Guy | Parody shirt; behaviour varies between versions but treated as Visitor in v1.0. | Kill him once as human and once as Visitor to unlock "Frenemy". | Random appearance with no prerequisites. |
Randomised Identities
These wild cards change per run. Confirm their stories, track false positives, and prepare to adapt.
Name | Visitor Tells | Notes |
---|---|---|
Twin Sisters | Assess individually—one may be human while the other exhibits symptoms like red eyes. | Community split: data suggests each spawn randomised. Do not assume matching identities. |
Wheelchair User | Visitor variant has an abnormal finger count. | Completely random identity; double-check hands before letting them rest. |
Beer-Loving Man | Friendly yet inconsistent account; requires full inspection. | Often misjudged due to casual demeanour—verify every symptom. |
Fortune Teller | Visitor form shows red eyes, yet she can still be human with other abnormal traits. | Links to cult ending hints. Balance occult clues with physical evidence. |
Grave Digger | Dirty fingernails from work (false symptom). | Confirm with questions about burial shifts before resorting to violence. |
Man in the Suit | Visitor version shows armpit fungus. | Refuses entry if the Nun or Cat Lady is already sheltered. |
Woman with Glasses | Red eyes, hairless armpits, burned hands—yet frequently human. | Requires multiple data points; one of the easiest humans to misjudge. |
Surgeon | X-ray always shows a heart spot (false); Visitor version adds a hand rash. | Will not enter if the Man with Mouth Sewn Shut is inside. |
