Who they are
Mushroom Eater is a story visitor, not a bed. Game files use that name. A Steam post has called him Mushroomhead. He only starts the quest if Cat Lady was allowed inside. The character article's infobox schedule is a knock on night 6, a return on night 9, and a night-10 visit only when the Book of Smiles steps were finished in time. He does not enter the house as a guest.
He is short and old, with long white hair, a huge white beard, and a shaggy brown robe over a lighter brown shirt. Mood swings between cheerful and anxious inside the same conversation. The Visitor pandemic is background noise to him. The Prophetic Man is the other repeating door figure. They are not the same quest.
Shroom or Doom still needs the rest of that ending's checklist, including accepting the invitation. This page is the Book of Smiles answer. The spoke page remains the ending page. Cat Lady is the prerequisite guest, and feeding her cat is the separate achievement Your Fluffy Master, which is not itself the mushroom dream.
What is the Book of Smiles?
The Book of Smiles is the handful of pages the Mushroom Eater leaves in the bedroom. They are not a collectible with an inventory icon you can miss in a menu. They are the instructions for interrupting what he calls the Mushroom Festival. He talks about mycelium, Mushroom Land, and the Festival while ignoring the Visitor crisis entirely, and he treats the homeowner as an apprentice. Fail a step and he writes the failure off as the impatience of younger people.
Day one after the pages: a mushroom is growing in the basement. The basement opens only after Cat Lady has come in with the cat. Pick the mushroom up and it moves to the fridge. Eat it. That is the Mushroom Dream, the achievement The road to the Mushroom Land, whose in-game tip is simply "See the mushroom dream." Day two: an apple. The character article places it on a living-room shelf in the room with the cross, and clicking it eats it. This site's Shroom or Doom ending page still calls that beat a hallway apple. Both descriptions are left standing here so the route is findable either way. Day three: a clock in the bedroom, set to 12.
If those steps are done on time he comes back, says the Festival was probably stopped, warns that mushrooms are not always what they seem, and later admits the Festival is still coming. He offers the trip to Mushroom Land. Accepting is the Shroom or Doom ending and its achievement. Refusing, or missing a day, ends the visits. The ending spoke is Shroom or Doom.
A fandom note says a bug hid him until the player had already seen a non-game-over ending, and that HOTFIX #5 on 23 September 2025 fixed it. This site's update log labels 23 September 2025 as Hotfix #3 and does not mention mushrooms, Hotfix #4, or Hotfix #5. The patch number is unverified against the log. Do not wait for a prior ending if he is already knocking in your version.
